Internet Marketing Firm: The Next Generation of Mad Men

By Ken Godberson

The rise of the Internet and social media has brought about massive amounts of change in daily life in the last fifteen years. Among the many industries that have begun to utilize the Internet would be marketing. In fact, firms that specialize on internet marketing have begun to establish themselves as high quality marketing machines for their clients. As the internet and social media continue to ingrain themselves into our lives, this provides businesses with an opportunity to bring their products/services to markets that were once unavailable.

So what exactly do Internet marketing firms focus on for their clients? They tend to focus on several areas including search engine optimization (SEO), web marketing, and social media marketing. SEO deals with key words that an ordinary person would put into Google or Yahoo in order to search. For example: Let's say you are looking for a shop that sells prom dresses somewhere on Long Island. Normally, a person would include key words like "prom dress", "Long Island" and such in that vein. The purpose of SEO is to promote a client website's keyword hits in order to bring it higher on search engine results.

On the web marketing front, Internet marketing firms have several strategies to help get their client's name out there. Such strategies include advertisement placing, blog outreach, app marketing and pay-per-click advertising. Having their clients appear in advertising space on websites or be linked to blog posts can increase web traffic. However, it is through the use of social media that can generate a greater amount of advertisement.

"Social media" is probably not a term many people are familiar with, despite the fact that many of those same people use social media. Think on how many people you know that have a Facebook page, a Twitter feed or a YouTube channel. These are all examples of social media platforms and an Internet marketing firm is beginning to take advantage of them. The main focus of these firms is to maximize people talking about their clients, whether through Facebook "likes", Twitter followers or YouTube subscribers.

It's not the same world it was fifteen years ago. With the changes in technology come the changes in industry. But the rise of Internet marketing firms has brought a golden opportunity for businesses, especially smaller ones, to open up their services to markets that were closed to them once upon a time.
